Rich Markow
Director, Symposia
Cancer Therapy & Research Center at UT Health Science Center San Antonio

HCEA:  How long have you been in the industry?
Rich Markow:
23 year, plus a few decades' related experience prior to that.

HCEA:  Where do you reside?
Rich Markow:
I live in San Antonio, TX.

HCEA:  Which college did you attend?
Rich Markow:
I received a B.S. in Communications from Northwestern University.

HCEA:  What are three adjectives which best describe you?
Rich Markow:
Passionate, Honest and Collaborative.

HCEA:  What was your very first job?
Rich Markow:
My first job with a regular schedule (and pay) was at the age of 11.  I worked at a drugstore in my hometown of Herkimer, NY as a stock boy, which involved sweeping up, delivering prescriptions and tending the magazine, paperback and comic book racks.

HCEA:  How did you get started in the industry?
Rich Markow:
I started in 1991 as a Retailer Representative for DC Comics (a division of Time-Warner), where I was responsible for booth and staff logistics at trade shows and comic cons.  I was also responsible for management of an annual meeting of key accounts.

HCEA:  What do you enjoy most about your job?
Rich Markow:
The moment when the doors open for the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium and several thousand of those smiling, excited attendees come pouring in!

HCEA:  What is the biggest challenge facing you today in your current job?
Rich Markow:
Staying on schedule and within budget as processes and technologies change, balancing stakeholder interests while never losing sight that the end result must be a productive and enjoyable attendee experience.

HCEA:
How long have you been a member with HCEA?
Rich Markow:
I've been involved with HCEA for approximately 8 years.

HCEA:  How has your HCEA membership helped you in your career?
Rich Markow:
HCEA's networking opportunities and educational programs have greatly broadened my knowledge base as well as provided context.  I'm able to cite that knowledge while conferring with my staff, supervisors and colleagues.

HCEA:  What's something on your lifelong "bucket” list?
Rich Markow:
To have regular gigs as a jazz vocalist.

HCEA:  What is the last good book you read?
Rich Markow:
Pax Britannica Trilogy, by Jan Morris (2nd Edition)

HCEA:  In your opinion, what is the best destination to do business or hold a meeting?
Rich Markow:
San Antonio, of course!  There's a wide variety of first-rate vendors and suppliers, hotels and venues.  People here work very hard to make your event a success.  Not least, there's also great value for the money.  The CVB can't be beat -- they'll really take good care of you.  Oh, did I mention the food and music?

HCEA: How about for vacation?
Rich Markow:
Great Britain.

A big thank you to Rich for taking the time to let us get to know him a little more!
