HCEA is turning the Spotlight on HCEA members. Each interview allows you the opportunity to get to know your colleagues within the HCEA community, inspires future HCEA professionals and leaders, and strengthens awareness of the diversity of professions within our industry.
HCEA: How long have you been in the industry?
I started my career in the industry in late 2000, so just over 13 years.
HCEA: Where do you reside?
I live in San Mateo, CA – which is less than 30 minutes away from San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland. I'm close to everything great about the bay area.
HCEA: Which college did you attend?
I received my Bachelors of Science in Business Administration at Notre Dame de Namur University (formerly College of Notre Dame).
HCEA: What are three adjectives which best describe you?
Outgoing, supportive and dedicated.
HCEA: What was your very first job?
After babysitting practically every neighborhood child, the natural transition when I was finally old enough for a ‘real' job was as a Childcare Provider at the local Gold's Gym.
HCEA: How did you get started in the industry?
I actually fell into it….I took a few months off between college and the real world. During that time a friend of a friend needed someone to help at a tradeshow. A couple of months later, they called me in for an interview and offered me a full time position.
HCEA: What do you enjoy most about your job?
It's always changing. Each project we do is customized for the client's needs, so every day has something different going on. I also really enjoying making a difference in people's lives….from being able to offer flexible employment opportunities to saving the day for a client in need, from something small, like a cheer-up phone call to something larger, like finding a way to pull off a promotion when our equipment is stuck on a truck, on a bridge where all the roads are closed from the unusual storm and it'll be, of course, a Saturday before the roads might open again. (Yep, that was a very recent adventure … and yep, we pulled it off with a couple hours to spare!)
HCEA: What is the biggest challenge facing you today in your current job?
Specific to the healthcare industry, staying current and regulation friendly! The changing guidelines in the industry have greatly affected our business as well as that of our customers. While it's been difficult, it's also challenged us to come up with more inventive activities and giveaways to help our clients whose needs haven't changed just because the rules have.
HCEA: How long have you been a member with HCEA?
I've been involved with HCEA since 2001, attending my first annual meeting in Minneapolis that year.
HCEA: How has your HCEA membership helped you in your career?
Contacts! I don't travel as much as most of my industry associates do, so without the annual meeting and membership, I would not have the expansive network that I've been able to cultivate throughout the years.
HCEA: What's something on your lifelong "bucket” list?
To share my dance passion further by being invited to teach and perform at an international Latin dance festival or congress.
HCEA: What is the last good book you read?
I read a lot of personal growth books, but for fiction I turn to Jodi Picoult. Her stories are always entertaining page-turners, but leave you with something to really think about. Often written from the perspective of someone who would normally be a side character, she explores tough social issues that arise in our complicated world. One of my favorites, My Sister's Keeper, was turned into a movie (which did it no justice – read the book!)
HCEA: In your opinion, what is the best destination to do business or hold a meeting?
As many have said before, I love San Diego. The weather can't be beat and you can practically walk anywhere you need to go, or catch a quick ride on the trolley. Being from the West Coast though, I can certainly sympathize when the trek brings you clear across the country, so I want to say something more like San Antonio or Austin … but I do so love San Diego.
HCEA: How about for vacation?
I really enjoy going somewhere new for vacation, so hopefully every time it's the best destination yet! My passion for salsa and Latin dancing leads me to have my eyes on Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic or Cuba for my next great adventure.
A big thank you to Rebecca for taking the time to let us get to know her a little more!
